Two Large Doors

Saturdays work involved hanging two large doors - 3ft 6in wide and 7ft high.
Luckily they weren't glazed otherwise I'm fairly sure I wouldn't have been able to hang them on my own, as it was they were near the limit of what I could handle (they were 56mm thick as well).
They were hung on parliment hinges and the doors were at the top of three steps. This meant that before I could hang each one I had to build myself a little platform to work off. With parliment hinges you have to be careful how you set them or it can all go horiblly wrong as you can work off the knuckle of the hinge like you can normally, luckily mine went on with no problems.
One door on and the other on the benches being cut and planed to size
By the end of the day I had both doors swinging and the locks drilled out, but by then I was loosing light and had to call it a day.

  2. Oh yea, things can go wrong quickly when it comes to doors and then when you work with heavy ones it is a whole different game. You got it right, happy day!

    1. I dread to think how many doors ive hung over the years, but so far no real disasters. Come close a few times!

  3. Now why didn't I ever think of that? love the "holder" for the door so you can mortice in the hinges from the top. I usually wind up clamping it flat to a sawhorse and working sideways.

    1. I call it a saddle. Some chippies have a v notch on one of their saw horses to push against. Its simple to make just some 4x2 notched with one side cut on the angle to accept the wedge you knock in to hold the door firm. Really good for planning a door down, not sure how I'd manage working with it on its side

    2. I have been using supports like these for 30 years of so. Mine have ply bases on them to stop them falling over . I put carpet in the slot to protect the doors and have the wedge attached to a peice of string which is attached to the support so I dont lose them . current ones are about 10 years old .

  4. Nice bit of work! When you finish in Cheltenham, fancy a job in Angola?

Kev, be careful about posting your email address in clear like that. There are web tools designed to scan the web for open email addresses like that which spammers use. You can pass on your email openly by disguising it. In your case, I would have said, myname(at)Hotmail(dot)com.

The other thing you can do is allow your email to be accessed through your profile in Blogger like I do, this keeps your email hidden to all except those who click to send a message to you.
