Trussed Roof

On Thursday a gang of 5 of us put on this trussed roof.
There's something strangely satisfying about putting on a trussed roof. It goes on so fast and looks so good when it's done.

We had the whole roof on and braced up in a day. All the trusses were lifted up by hand. I can see why big building sites opt for trussed roofs rather than ones that are cut on which take much longer and involve a lot more thinking.

  1. You'd be right at home on a job site here in the US Kev. Looks the same as what we do here. Typically we do frame, square and sheath our walls flat on the deck and stand them up all finished. Some go so far as to trim out and put the siding on the gables as well before they stand them up so they don't have to climb staging to do it afterwards. The trusses go up fast and there is little thinking involved, provided you brace them properly. The 6pm news has shown a few accidents here recently where a couple of fellows were injured when the whole stack of trusses tipped over just as they were almost done. Trusses do make for a lot of wasted space in the attic so I prefer to cut our own rafters on site.

    1. I've worked on sites before where the carpenters have built the whole thing on the ground and lifted up the completed frame straight onto the house.
We always try to brace them as we go but I could see how easy it would be for them to go over.

  2. Trusses work great, but I hate the wasted space.

    1. I know what you mean about the wasted space. You can buy attic trusses over here for a little more money and they give you much more rom in the loft.

    1. I should imagine that most of the truss work in the factory is automated?
Yeah it changed a lot that day. It then took a day to get it felt and battened so that was another big impact.
