A Heavy Project

Before Christmas I was asked to make a FLB gate (Framed, Ledged & Braced) for a customer who I'd been working for. With the snow and Christmas getting in the way I only managed to get the timber from the saw mill the other day (sapele).

The cost was quite high because they wanted it to match their existing gates which were 55mm thick.
The project took a little longer than I would have liked due to the fact that the stiles were 125mm wide - more than my little morticer could handle, they all had to be finished off by hand.
The gate looks nice sanded up, but it's so heavy and difficult to move - I'm not sure I'll be able to hang it by myself (or even get it to the job in my little van)!

  2. Heavy. Nice job though. You are obviously a talented craftsman. In my experience everyone is a carpenter until they see what a real carpenter does, really good work, well done. Geoff.

  3. I agree. Nice gate well made. I can't stand sapele though...makes me sneeze. Your customer should be delighted.

  4. Thanks for the comments! Sapele is not a timber I want to be working with again anytime soon, everything in the workshop has a layer of red dust over it!
Still a nicer timber than what I'm currently building a pantry shelf unit out of - MDF!

  5. I thought mdf was banned. I've heard of a new fibre type bourd made from bamboo fibre, have you used it yet?

  6. MDF is banned in the states but not here in England. I've made quite a few things out of it in the past and it does paint to a good finish just a bit dusty to work with and it doesn't like water.
Not heard about the bamboo board though, if its any good Im sure it will be in the builders yard soon, although people dont like change and normally take some convincing on a new product!
