Handrail

I had to add some handrail above some stairs today.
A nice job to do but I had to notch the newel post into the stairs to make it strong enough. I know I've said it before but I always make sure the newel has a good fixing.
Mortise and tenon cut by hand
The handrail was mortised and tenoned into the top for strength then the hole thing fixed into place as one. I then added the spindles and any beading it needed before sanding it up.

  1. Excellent job. Please tell me they will just oil the wood and not paint it!

    1. The Sapele handrail will be stained and varnished (not my choice but it matches the rest of the house) and all the soft wood will be painted I'm afraid.

  2. The satisfaction of a job well done. Once again I am struck by the similarities. Were it not for name brand on the bags of plaster/cement? the job could have been on this side of the pond.

    1. The bags contain monocouche, which is like a render but none of us have ever used it before. The plasterer has been getting a really good finish with it around the windows externally.
